A unique and elegant piece of home decor, NordicArts are excited to offer
genuine
grade 1 reindeer furs from Rovaniemi, Arctic
Circle,
Finland.........."The Gateway to Lapland". Naturally soft, thick, luxurious and
malleable, reindeer skin is ideal for manufacturing all kinds of leather
goods. The thick fur and pliable hide of the reindeer withstands the
bitter Arctic cold, an excellent natural material worked by the hand of
the arctic craftsman.
Renowned for their warmth (the hairs are hollow,
trapping heat), softness, durability and water-resistant
properties, our furs are cured and tanned by a unique process which
involves salting the pelts using a drum. |

Reindeer are abundant
in
Northern Scandinavia (they outnumber people by over 30 to 1), and are NOT AN
ENDANGERED SPECIES. They are farmed by Sámi herdsmen in Lapland
primarily for their meat and culled humanely, with the pelt and horn as
by-products, which means that not only is your purchase a great compliment
to your house or flat, but also an eco-friendly contribution to the
preservation of this magnificent animal (the seasonal cull being crucial
to this) and to the the lifestyle of the native Laplanders, the Sámi.
Ideal as a unique and elegant throw, floor covering or wall decoration, or
even as a comfortable and practical ground cover for a picnic, camping or
hiking!
Reindeer furs of similar grade (and even lower!) sell in famous high
street stores all over the UK at up to £130 and higher. This item is
tanned and cured to the highest degree (grade one) as opposed to simply
dried. Initially there is a pleasant odour of well-cured leather which
fades after a while, after which time is odourless.
NB: items in the pictures are examples only; each item is
unique, and as such colour, thickness and size will vary slightly.
Average size is approximately 50" x 32 ".
During the Summer season you're more than likely to get a brown/grey fur
due to seasonality, and during Winter, white/grey.
Shipping: £5 per item within the UK, £30 per item rest of the world
(airmail only; surface mail takes up to 8 weeks),
all via registered and insured post. Please note that this shipping cost
is inclusive of any other items you have ordered.
Care of your reindeer pelt: Traditionally, reindeer furs are
cleaned with snow and a soft brush (as opposed to hard - this pulls the hairs out),
but it's important that the hide has been outside first so it's cold. In
the absence of this resource.......a brush, water and a sponge will do the
trick just as well!
Note: When purchasing a reindeer pelt it's important to
recognise
the distinction between DRIED and CURED skins. Dried skins are cheaper but
they are not tanned or cured. If you purchase a dried skin abroad, not
only will it give off an extremely unpleasant odour (not dissimilar to
sweaty socks), you will also not get it past customs.
